Pellets
Characteristics of Pharmaceutical Pellets
The term “pellet” is derived from the English word for small spherical granules. Pharmaceutical pellets are defined as spherical or semi-spherical particles of uniform and well-defined size, typically ranging from approximately 250 µm to 2 mm in diameter. Pellets can be considered a specialized form of granulates with superior shape uniformity.
Advantages in Multiparticulate Dosage Forms
Pellets are widely used in multiparticulate oral dosage forms due to their excellent flow properties, uniform drug distribution and flexible formulation design. They can be filled into hard capsules or compressed into tablets such as multiple-unit pellet systems (MUPS). Common manufacturing methods include extrusion and spheronisation, drug layering and spray-based processes.
Functional coatings are frequently applied to pellets to achieve modified, delayed or targeted drug release. Owing to their reproducible size and surface characteristics, pellets enable robust pharmaceutical manufacturing processes and are well suited for advanced oral solid dosage forms requiring precise dosing and controlled release profiles.
